Name: Demyx
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Age: Appears somewhere in his early 20s, but is technically somewhat younger than that.
Gender: Male
Species in canon: Nobody
Appearance: Demyx is light-skinned, brown-haired, and fairly tall and thin without being particularly bony or angular. He has a narrow but boyish face that never makes intimidating look very much more than immature, but can seem quite amiable now and then – he has a nice smile, even if it doesn't quite reach his bright green eyes. He's perhaps most notable for his hair, though: it's cut into a mohawk that sticks straight up at the top and hangs down at the back, like a very unfortunate sort of shaved mullet. It utterly fails at making him look like a badass. Demyx doesn't seem to mind, though. He carries himself casually, and he's often tapping his feet or snapping his fingers – it's a benign enough habit until you pay enough attention to notice it's to the rhythm of a heartbeat that isn't there any more.
Personality: Most of his reasons for doing anything come from, firstly, the goal of self-preservation, and secondly, the hope that acting like he remembers his other acted will bring him closer to being able to feel. It doesn't, but he clings desperately to his secondhand motivations because they're all he's got. He's not very good at it, though, and as a result his behaviour is often very disjointed, like a particularly poor improv actor. Instead of taking everything that's just happened and working out how a normal person with emotions would be affected cumulatively by it, he takes everything individually as it comes and reacts as he thinks he ought to react specifically to that without thinking about it very much in the context of a broader overall situation. He might act really upset about a death, but if someone makes a joke he'll be laughing as if he finds it genuinely funny a moment later.
His pretense, flawed as it is, is not malicious or conniving – that is to say, his intention is not to deceive others so much as it is for his own sake. Without borrowing his dead other's motivations, he would have no reason to do very much of anything, and he'd rather not think about that. So Demyx strives to be like the human he remembers he once was, and, apart from the painfully obvious mistakes that mark the cracks in his facade, he consequently comes across as a harmless goof, something of a whiner, rather lazy and more than a little cowardly, and somewhat slow on the uptake when it comes to things that don't involve music. He attempts to uphold his other's vegetarian, pacifist sensibilities, but isn't very consistent about it due to a lack of any genuine sense of moral obligation on his part. His memories make him think he ought to, but he can't care. He had, after all, no objection to the Organization's methods. When faced with orders he doesn't much like, he'll be quick to complain, and loud about it, but, although he might not always remember what exactly he's supposed to be doing without prompting, he doesn't usually show any hesitance when it comes to the actual carrying-out – he does sometimes 'switch off' his kooky personality if he needs to do something that he knows he wouldn't have been able, emotionally, to do when he was Somebody.
Like most of his fellow human-shaped nobodies, Demyx does have likes, dislikes, preferences, pet peeves and hobbies that are more than just affectations to fill a void, but Demyx uses the memories of how he used to be to exaggerate the way he is.
The thing he exaggerates the least is his fondness for music – he doesn't need to. Although he has no heart to be lifted by the melodies he plays, music is as close to a genuine passion for Demyx as he's really capable of getting. It makes him remember better than anything else does what it was like to love something.
Strengths: Music. Demyx is a skilled musician, and, although he can't write music since he lost his heart, he can still play nearly any tune he turns his hand to. The instrument he's become most used to is the magical sitar that becoming a Nobody granted him the ability to summon, but in his human life he was a talented pianist and guitarist, and he has retained these skills as a Nobody. He has a keen ear for music and a decent singing voice, although he wouldn't consider the latter his forte.
Although it doesn't always look like it, he does possess the powerfully strong will required for a Nobody to look like a human. He might seem flaky, but point him at a battle that really matters – or disagree with him about the importance of music – and it becomes apparent that he can be deadly serious when he wants to be.
Weaknesses: His main weakness is his dismal failure at behaving like a normal human being in the face of lacking emotion. He's just bad at it, and anyone who pays attention can tell.
As a Nobody, his sitar and powers over water made Demyx formidable in battle – much more so than he was generally willing to let people think – but he's not much of a fighter when the only thing that he's armed with is his own physical strength. Not much of a fighter at all.
Background: The human who became Demyx was a young man who was madly passionate about music, and wrote songs that spoke straight from his heart. He believed in the power of music to heal, and that the world needed healing. He was firm and hopeful in the belief that he and his bandmates would make it big one day – but they didn't. He lost his heart to darkness when his world was overrun by Heartless. Thanks to his strong heart and will, his body and mind lived on as the Nobody named Demyx. Like any Nobody, Demyx urgently longs for his heart to be restored, so that he can write his songs again, and really mean the music he plays, so that he doesn't have to live with the pain of knowing he's empty inside – so being told that Organization XIII aimed to give hearts to Nobodies was enough to convince him to join, and to serve the Organization unquestioningly as number IX, right up until he died fighting Sora. As much as a Nobody can really believe in anything, Demyx believed in the Organization: the way he saw it, they were all in the same boat and ought to stick together to achieve their common goal. As such, he takes a dim view of treachery and doesn't like the idea of other members abandoning the goal that he believed in.
